What is the Addition Principle in Algebra? The mathematical branch involves equations or expressions that consist of variables in addition to constants and arithmetic operations. This branch of mathematics revolves around rules for manipulating and solving for variables. There are several rules and principles that you need to bring into use when solving algebraic equations. The most basic methodology for solving algebraic equations is through the addition principle. So, what is the addition principle? To understand the addition principle, you can take the balance analogy as an example. If both sides of an equation are equal, increasing each side by a specific value will change the value. However, both sides will still be equal. To understand this principle, we take the following example; 3 = 3. Now, if you add 2 on each side of the equalsto sign, 3 + 2 = 3 + 2, 5 = 5. You see how the values on both sides changed, but they are still equal? Well, this is what the addition principle is. It is a way you can eliminate the constant values from the variable side of the equalsto sign.
