Have you heard anytime that addition and multiplication are related?
If no, then you students can use this skill to improve your math multiplication.
Many students find it difficult to multiply the numbers, but if you
practice this skill to hone the multiplication skills, you will find
it easy to solve various multiplication problems.
Multiplication is also known as repeated addition. This explains
everything about how addition and multiplication are related. However,
to understand it in a better way, we will consider few instances.
It is described in next paragraph.
Understanding the Relation in a More Lucid Manner:
Let us consider an instance that, there are three students. Each
student requires two pencils. So, what is the total number of pencils
required all together? You can solve it by adding 2 + 2 + 2 and can
obtain the answer as six pencils. To explain it in detail, since there
are three students and each one of them require two pencils, therefore
adding two pencils three times (since three students) gives the answer
as six.
Thus, you have seen that you got the answer for the multiplication
problem using repeated addition. Now, if you want the answer for 7
x 6, then you can combine 7 parts with 6 objects in each part. That
is, 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 42, this is equal to the multiplication
equation as 7 x 6 = 42.
Math also uses multiplication and addition, to make students understand
the addition concepts such as manipulating the groups to obtain the
total products. It also helps to find out the size or quantity of
elements in several groups of similar size.
For instance, if you have 6 candies in a pack and you purchase four
more packs, then how many candies are you having right now? You can
solve this problem by addition method i.e., 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24.This
is a repeated addition, which is replaceable by multiplication method
of, 4 x 6 = 24.
This is also an explanation of multiplication, wherein multiplication
problems include several sets. In the above-mentioned example, you
can have a multiplication and addition relationship, e.g., 4 packs
of candies and 6 candies per pack show the same thing.
Here, the relation between multiplication method and repeated addition
method apparently explains the requirement of understanding the basic
addition before learning the 10 x 10 multiplication table.
In short, multiplication is a form of repeated addition, which means
that it is a quickest method to add a series of numbers.
For example, 3 x 5 means adding 3 together for five consecutive times
or 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 in terms of addition. You need to keep in mind
that, memorizing math will trouble you in solving multiplication problems,
since math is all about how to formulate or devise and solve problems,
and not recitation.
It is all About Formulation:
You need to formulate instead of memorizing or reciting. For example,
avoid memorizing that 3 x 7 = 21, instead you may consider it as 3
x 7 = 7 + 7 + 7 = 14 + 7 = 21. This particular method is a bit challenging
in terms of addition for a child, but it lucidly shows the relationship
between multiplication and addition.
Accordingly, you may also calculate 9 x 7 = 10 x 7 - 7 = 63 or 6
x 7 = 3 x 7 + 3 x 7 = 21 + 21 = 42. It is also a creative method to
learn the multiplication table, which explains you the exact working
of math.
Therefore, if you follow this method in your lower standards, then
you may easily solve the problems in higher standards.
